50s Fever Hits Goldfields Libraries this Autumn

Tuesday 1 March 2016

The fabulous 50s will come to life at Goldfields Libraries this Autumn with the new seasonal program just launched. More than 100 fun, free events for adults and children will be rolled out over the season.

A highlight will be a visit from ‘The Dressmaker’ author Rosalie Ham and movie producer Sue Maslin to Bendigo and Castlemaine Libraries. The story is set in the fictional country town of Dungatar in the 50s, and features a star studded cast including Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth and Hugo Weaving.

Also following the 50s theme, a selection of Marilyn Monroe movies will be screened at various branches, along with dramatic readings of ‘Fabulous Moments in 50s Fiction’ by Narelle Stone.

“With the Bendigo Art Gallery’s ‘Marilyn Monroe’ exhibition currently at the forefront of people’s minds, the 50s is a fitting theme to incorporate into the library’s Autumn program,” said Mark Hands, Community Partnerships and Engagement Manager.

“We have also put a modern twist on the 50s by running a ‘Recreate the 50s’ competition on Instagram – the best of both worlds!”

Cultural Diversity Week will play a big part in March activities, with several multicultural themed events in collaboration with the Bendigo Festival of Cultures. African drumming sessions, cultural diversity storytimes, Colourfest films about the migrant experience and Harmony Day activities are just a few of the vibrant events on offer. More information is available at www.ncgrl.vic.gov.au/culturaldiversity

A variety of fun and engaging children’s activities will be held during the school holidays, including Kid’s Party Confidential comedian Sean Murphy, interactive Story Theatre, technology based activities such as interlibrary Minecraft and digital book publishing, cool science activities and some practical Bunnings DIY sessions.

As part of National Youth Week, young adults will be able to enter a Flash Fiction writing competition and join in the very popular ‘Library Lock In’ at Castlemaine Library. Bendigo Young Writers Association always welcomes new members aged 13-18 for regular meetings with guest speakers.

There are several literary events throughout the season, including dietician and author Sallyanne Pisk speaking on her book ‘Eating for You’, and the launch of children’s author Trace Balla’s new picture book ‘Rockhopping’.

History buffs will find plenty on offer during Bendigo Heritage Discovery Week in May as part of the National Trust Heritage Festival. The program is available at: www.ncgrl.vic.gov.au/heritageweek

Those with loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia are encouraged to attend a series of workshops presented by Alzheimer’s Australia. The workshops cover many different aspects of coping with changes in behaviour and communication – more details are available online: www.ncgrl.vic.gov.au/alzheimers

Several branches will celebrate the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea in April and May, some with presentations from inspirational speakers.

All events are free and some require bookings.
