Celebrate National Youth Week at Goldfields Libraries

Thursday 31 March 2016

Calling young adults: National Youth Week belongs to you! Get involved in the celebrations at Goldfields Libraries with some exciting, free activities.

Get your writing caps on! The ‘Flash300’ Flash Fiction Writing Competition will kick off on Monday 11 April and offers the opportunity to get published and win great prizes. A selection of high quality entries will be included in an anthology which will be made available through Goldfields Libraries.

“Flash Fiction is a super short story genre which is gaining popularity amongst readers and writers alike,” said Tammy Higgs, Goldfields Libraries Programs and Events Coordinator.

“We are very excited about the competition and look forward to producing our inaugural Flash Fiction Anthology with the most impressive entries!”

As the name suggests, the Flash300 competition has a limit of 300 words with a theme of “Betrayal”. The competition is open to 13-18 year olds and closes on Monday 6 June.

Those needing to shake off writer’s block and find some inspiration need not worry, local published author Christie Nieman will be facilitating two Flash Fiction Writing workshops to get you started. The Bendigo Library workshop is on Monday 11 April, and the Castlemaine Library workshop is on Wednesday 13 April. Places are limited and bookings are required.

“Teens take charge! The library is yours for the night… Mwahaha”. That’s right, the Castlemaine ‘Library Lock In’ is back! What can a group of 13-16 year olds get up to in a locked library after dark for two hours? WII U gaming, photo booth, pizza, make-your-own sundaes and more of course! Places are limited so book in for Friday 15 April by phoning Castlemaine Library on 5472 1458.

Grumpy Cat fans will be excited to know that Meme Craft is coming to Bendigo and Woodend Libraries! Pick your favourite image and create your own meme, then turn it into a unique badge or bag. Sessions are on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 April.

“It’s great to offer our young adult audience a mix of creative and technology related events, plus activities that are just plain fun, like the Castlemaine Library Lock In, which was a real hit last year,” said Ms Higgs.

All events are free, some require bookings. For details visit www.ncgrl.vic.gov.au/nyw
