Help us celebrate Kangaroo Flat Library’s 40th birthday
Kangaroo Flat Library is turning 40 on Wednesday September 25, 2019, and we want you to help us celebrate! Festivities will include a photographic display, a celebration cake, balloons, birthday stories, party hats to craft, face painting by Pass-the-Parcel, badge-making and a special birthday storytime! And, as our gift to the public, Kangaroo Flat Library will have a fines amnesty from 23-28 September - so present your library card to have your fines waived and bring in those long overdue items!
The Marong Shire Library, as it was originally called, was officially opened on Tuesday 25 September, 1979. Boasting a striking high roofline to increase natural light and listening posts for borrowers to listen to records and cassettes, the building was designed to bring a modern library service to the residents of the Shire. This included a designated children’s corner well-stocked with books, a large courtyard for people of all ages to sit and read in the sun, a public telephone and even a fish tank.
While much has changed in the library world since 1979, one thing still remains – our commitment to enriching our communities through a contemporary library service.
A local community member described the library as the community’s living room. “We couldn’t agree more,” says Kangaroo Flat Library manager, Kinta Walker. “Libraries these days are about so much more than books. We run exciting and informative programs for people of all ages, we offer free Wi-Fi and computer access, printing and digital support. And with our amazing eLibrary, including free eBooks, audiobooks, music and movies, we are open 24/7. We want every person to know they are welcome to come to our library to relax, read and take a break.”
