Ross McMullin reveals stories of Lost Australian Soldiers

Thursday 2 April 2015

Historian and Biographer, Ross McMullin will visit Eaglehawk and Heathcote libraries in the lead up to the ANZAC Centenary to discuss his book Farewell Dear People: Biographies of Australia’s Lost Generation.

60,000 Australians lost their lives in the 'Great War'. The death of so many was catastrophic for Australia - a whole generation lost from a young country with a small population.

Ross McMullin’s most recent work is a multi-biography of ten exceptional but little-known Australians who died in the Great War.

The book was awarded the 2013 National Cultural Award for its ‘outstanding contribution to the quality of Australian cultural life’.

Bendigo Library Adult Programs Coordinator, Sue Mooney says evaluations of the Great War have traditionally focussed on the sheer numbers of lives lost and not the individuals.

“In Farewell Dear People Ross McMullin wanted to find out some of the personal stories behind the number of lives lost in World War One”

“He focussed on ten outstanding soldiers - among them an architect, a winemaker, a footballer and a medical researcher of international acclaim” Ms Mooney says

Ross McMullin will be appearing Friday 17 April at Eaglehawk Library 1.30-3pm and later that afternoon at Heathcote Library from 5.30-7pm.

His discussion will be followed by a book signing and refreshments.

The event is free but places are limited. Please visit www.ncgrl.vic.gov.au or call 54492781.
