Author Ross McMullin Brings WWI Hero Pompey Elliott Back to Life

Wednesday 18 October 2017

Close to Remembrance Day and as the Anzac Centenary commemoration continues, Goldfields Libraries welcomes author Ross McMullin to share his latest book about Australia’s most famous fighting general – Pompey Elliott At War: In His Own Words.

Born in Charlton in the Shire of Loddon, Harold Edward ‘Pompey’ Elliott’s distinguished career in the Australian armed forces began with the Imperial Bushmen in the South African War in 1900. He rose through the ranks, to ultimately command battalions during the First World War. The landing at Anzac, the Battle of Lone Pine and the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux are just a few of the memorable battles that resonate with Australians, in which Elliott was involved.

Where Ross McMullin’s previous book on Pompey was a ‘life-and-time biography’, this new book takes Pompey’s words from wherever he could and shapes them into a narrative format that is frank, forthright, emotional and controversial.

Come along and be moved and inspired as he brings the remarkable Pompey back to life.
