Seed Libraries
Next time you're thinking about starting a vegetable garden, or adding to your established vegie patch, pop into your local library and borrow some seeds!
Libraries in Castlemaine, Eaglehawk, Kangaroo Flat, Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend now all have seed libraries!
Much like a traditional library, the fantastic initiative works on the simple principles of borrowing, growing and returning. Instructions on how, when, and where to plant the seeds are provided; growers then nurture and eventually enjoy the produce. By allowing the plants to flower, the seeds can be collected and returned to the library for the next person or family to plant. Easy!
Castlemaine Library’s seed library is supported by The Hub Plot and Growing Abundance, who run regular seed saving workshops and gardening groups to share advice, tips and tricks. Seed libraries in Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend are operated by Macedon Ranges seed Savers.
Volunteers meet regularly to help sort, package and label the donated seeds. Anyone is welcome to drop in and help out. Meetings are held:
- First Thursday of the month (exc. Jan), 11am-12pm at Castlemaine Library
- Second Tuesday of the month, 2-3pm at Kyneton Library
- Fourth Friday of the month, 10.30-11.30am at Romsey Library
- Second Friday of the month, 10-11am at Woodend Library
The seed libraries are free and everyone is welcome to use them during library opening hours. Remember, our libraries also have a great collection of gardening and seed saving books available to borrow!
Donations of saved seeds are also welcome.
