Bendigo Possum Skin Cloak with images burned into pelt. Includes Bunjil. The Bendigo Possum Skin Cloaks Project

Bendigo Library is proudly home to three Possum Skin Cloaks. Created as part of the Possum Skin Cloaks Project in 2015, the cloaks range in size and include imagery representing and respecting the Local Aboriginal Nation, The Dja Dja Wurrung, and the Creator Spirit of the land – Bunjil.

The Project was facilitated by local First Nations representatives Simon Briggs (Penrose), Matthew Penrose and Trina Dalton-Oogjes, and ran over three weekends, providing the local Aboriginal community with an opportunity to learn and engage in the traditional process.

To read more about the Project, including the community consultation process, workshops and the Cloak designs and themes, read the project report here.

The Bendigo Possum Skin Cloaks Projects was funded by The Regional Indigenous Family Violence Committee with support from The Bendigo NAIDOC Committee, The Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation (now Djaara) and the Bendigo & District Aboriginal Co-Operative.
